In December 2021 alone, our emergency shelter hosted 215 people of 5 different nationalities, providing not only a place to sleep but also access to a kitchen and food, internet, references to nearby legal and medical services, diapers and baby food, blankets, tents, basic medicine, and much more. Of these 215, 87 were women, and 77 children.
Our community resource center and current shelter location center, located just steps from two international border crossings and the Chaparral border camp, provides shelter, food and kitchen access, blankets, dozens of asylum seekers, refugees, houseless people and deportees every day, with particular attention to the needs of women and children arriving to Tijuana with the goal of seeking asylum in the U.S. or Mexico.
Our shelter often finds itself at three times it’s operating capacity; despite our best efforts to place people in long-term shelters or en route to their next stop on their migratory journey quickly, our meager facilities (which are really supposed to be offices) are hosting 70-90 each night. Every shelter in Tijuana is full to the brim, and BLCC focuses on sheltering those who are just arriving will not be accepted into a long-term shelter.
Emergency shelter is our focus - the average stay is about three days, and most services are to residents and walk-ins alike.
Our work is made possible through the support of the grassroots community please share our fundraiser and donate if you can!
